Zaragoza, April 30, 2018. The researcher at the Institute of Materials Science of Aragon  Larry Falvello has been condecorated with the gold medal from the Faculty of Sciences of the Pavol University Jozef Šafárik, in Košice.
This distinction has been awarded thanks to the development of a doctoral thesis program co-supervised by the University of Zaragoza and the University of Košice, the second largest population in Slovakia. The award ceremony took place last week at a solemn ceremony at the academic center, which celebrates its 55th anniversary.

About a decade ago, Larry Falvello and Professor Cernák from Košice decided to embark on exchanges that went beyond the Erasmus program and this is how this collaboration emerged. In the words of the ICMA researcher, “now we can say that the results have been encouraging and that at least Pavol Jozef Šafárik University has expressed its satisfaction in a formal way”.

According to Professor Falvello, carrying out a collaboration in the preparation of a doctoral thesis and the training of doctoral students is not a trivial task. “It is important that the two directors are clear about their objectives and the role that each one is going to develop in directing the work. Above all, it is essential to give absolute priority to the training of the student. If we do it well, the result will be a young person with a broad vision of science and society, aware that there may be different points of view even on simple questions, and prepared to make important contributions to the scientific development of the future. ” In addition to this collaboration, both professors have research programs and various publications of joint works.

Larry Falvello has a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Cambridge, England. After ten years working at the A&M University of Texas (USA), he arrived in Zaragoza in 1991 to join the Institute of Materials Science of Aragon and the Department of Inorganic Chemistry of the University of Zaragoza. In addition to developing his research program in Structural Chemistry, he is senior editor of the journal Acta Crystallographica, Section C.
